Navy supports a range of sport and fitness initiatives to ensure its people are ready and able to perform at optimal levels in the defence of Australia and its interests. Members can find everything they need to play sport and keep fit on base, plus special interest clubs for activities such as dragon boat racing, skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Ships and submarines have gym equipment too plus other avenues for exercise.
There are many opportunities available to Navy members to participate in sport from ship-level competitions to domestic and international tours and engagements. Representing Navy and/or their ship or establishment is not considered time off work and chains of command support their members playing sport wherever possible.
At present, Navy Sport has 11 recognised sports associations:
- Alpine snow sports
- Australian rules football
- Cricket
- Football
- Golf
- Lawn bowls
- Nordic skiing and biathlon
- Rugby league
- Rugby union
- Sailing
- Surfing
Australian Defence Force sport
Many ADF roles involve outdoor activity. Regular exercise is an important part of service life and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Further information about fitness requirements in the Australian Defence Force can be found on the ADF Careers health and fitness portal.
The ADF Sports Cell, in collaboration with the three Services, sets the strategic direction for sport in the ADF. This creates an environment for all ADF members to participate and benefit from sport as a competitor, coach or administrator, and recognises the inherent connections between sport, exercise, health and the overall wellbeing of ADF personnel.
