Royal Australian Naval College

Mission

The mission of the Royal Australian Naval College is to coach, mentor, and train the next generation of Navy leaders to become maritime warfighters, professional sailors, and resilient officers. This is to ensure that the Navy can defend and protect Australia and its national interests.

Training

New Entry Officers Course

The course focuses on Naval leadership, emphasising the essential qualities of both team members and team leaders.

The New Entry Officers Course (NEOC) is an 18-week initial entry program, conducted residentially at HMAS Creswell. It teaches the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be an effective junior Naval Officer.

Development of mateship with fellow Junior Officers on the course is an important part of a career in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Trainees are inducted through a 4-week Initial Training Period (ITP). After successfully completing the ITP, NEOC students then move on to experience a wide variety of introductory training, including survival at sea, ship handling, first aid, firefighting, and the law of armed conflict. This training takes place both in the classroom and at sea.

The Reserve Entry Officers Course

The course teaches the fundamental skills necessary for a naval officer. It consists of 4 phases, starting with a 16-day residential component followed by a series of residential and distance learning modules.

Lateral Initial Entry Training

The purpose of the course is to provide mandatory initial entry training required by all RAN personnel, as well as an overview of the divisional requirements that are unique to the RAN system.

This gap training is designed for personnel transferring from other Australian Defence Force services or foreign armed services to the RAN.

The course is a 4-week program identified as a requirement for the leadership and management continuum.

University Entry Officers Course

The aim of the course is to enable trainees, as junior officers, to undertake university studies and develop a fundamental understanding of the Navy. This consists of a one-week residential program designed to provide insight into life in the RAN.

Warrant Officer and Senior Sailor Entry Officers Course

The aim of the course is to develop the non-specialist skills and knowledge needed to assist with a successful transition to becoming an officer. While at HMAS Creswell, participants will be expected to develop these skills and exhibit exemplary standards of behaviour and dress at all times.

Mid-Career Entry Course

The Mid-Career Entry Course offers training that mirrors the Reserve Entry Officers Course Phases 1-3, without the need to complete Phase 4. The positions within the Mid-Career Entry Course are specialised, and candidates are selected by the Navy for specific roles for a set period of time.
