Established in September 1920, HMAS Cerberus is Navy’s premier training establishment. It is located 70km from Melbourne near Crib Point on Hanns Inlet, Western Port Bay.
The primary role of HMAS Cerberus is training Navy personnel with about 6000 personnel trained annually. With the establishment of four tri-service schools over the last 13 years, this role has been extended to training Army and Air Force personnel.
Training schools located at HMAS Cerberus include:
- the School of Survivability and Ship Safety
- Maritime Logistics Health
- the Engineering Faculty
- Defence Force School of Signals
- Supply and Health Faculty
- School of Music.
The HMAS Cerberus Heritage and Learning Centre (aka museum) is located on the base and features a large heritage collection of artefacts, photographs and memorabilia.
The base has numerous training and recreation facilities, two chapels, small marina and attractive grounds. The beach and bushlands around the bay provide beautiful surrounds for walks and expeditions. Other activities popular in the region include horse riding, trail bike riding, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.
