HMAS Armidale to visit Lord Howe Island

15 February 2008

HMAS Armidale will be visiting Lord Howe Island from 14 - 18 February 2008 to participate in the 220th anniversary celebrations of the island's discovery.

Darwin-based HMAS Armidale was the first of 14 Armidale Class Patrol Boats (ACPB) acquired by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) to replace the previous Fremantle Class Patrol Boats. Her primary function is to support border protection operations around the coast of Australia.

Leaving Darwin on 11 January 2008, Armidale has recently visited Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney. In Sydney, Armidale berthed at Darling Harbour in support of the Pacific 2008 Sea Power Conference at the Sydney Convention Centre. On completion of her visit to Lord Howe Island Armidale will return to home port.

During the ship's visit to the island, the crew of 21 will be joining in the celebrations and participating in some of the planned activities, including a Twenty20 cricket match, golf and bowling competitions and the Discovery Day celebrations on Sunday, 17 February.

"The crew are very much looking forward to participating in the discovery celebrations and to exploring all that Lord Howe Island has to offer," said Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Chris Cooper.

"It is an honour and privilege for us to be invited to attend this special event."
