ASRU was formed in 1963 through the need to better promote and market Rugby Union within the Defence Force. The formation of ASRU also provided the vehicle for very talented Defence players to gain state and national recognition while remaining in the defence force.

ASRU fields both men's and women's senior teams selected from serving members of the ADF. ASRU is a non-profit organisation, which seeks to turn back monies it receives into the development of Rugby through out the ADF.

ASRU is an affiliation of the ARU. Likewise, ASRU has a national and international playing program, which provides ideal exposure and marketing opportunities for corporations. Each year ASRU is plans a busy schedule with the Australian Services Rugby Championship (ASRC) competition between Army, Navy and Air Force. From this competition, the Australian Services Squad is chosen to participate in training camps, culminating in matches high profile and quality opposition such as Australian Universities for the prestigious Weary Dunlop Cup. Other high profile matches are also planned with ASRU expected to compete in the Australian Rugby Shield against teams from NSW and QLD Country and other state based sides. Regular games against NSW Suburban are also played.

Likewise, the female squad will also be chosen and plans to participate in the Australian National Championships run by the ARU. Female rugby with in the Defence force has seen increased participation over the past few years, with members of our ASRU-W side being skilled and fortunate enough in the past to gain selection for the Australian Wallaroo's.
