Lawn bowls in Australia has undergone massive changes over the last couple of years. This is due mainly to the influx of young players to the game. Most clubs now realise that their survival is dependent on the players of the future. These changes have been reflected in the Royal Australian Navy with the formation of the RAN Lawn Bowls Association (RANLBA) in March 2004. Members have been very pro-active and have participated in many events including the Australian Masters Games and many club events around the country.

Two successful RANLBA Singles and Pairs events have been conducted in NSW and VIC over the last two years. A team of eighteen competed last year at Rosehill in Sydney for the inaugural Championships. Since that time we have had a fifty percent increase this year with twenty seven competing at Hastings in Victoria.

The RANLBA has also been much more competitive in Inter-Service, winning in NSW in 2005 for the first time in over ten years and also winning in ACT and WA. The Nationals Championships in Brisbane in 2005 saw Navy put up one of their best ever performances going down by 21 to RAAF and 2 to Army. Navy has never won this competition since its inception in 1983 and the RANLBA intend changing this in the near future.

These improvements have been made possible by support from the Navy Sports Council and sponsorship from the RAN Central Canteen Fund.
