Netball has been played at local and state level since the early 1980's. The Australian Defence Force Netball Association (ADFNA) received accreditation from the Australian Defence Force Sports Council (ADFSC) on 20 December 1990.

Netball is now a prestige sport within the ADF. The ADFNA participates up to, and has been successful at, international level.

The introduction of a Mixed competition in 1996 and a Mens competition in 1998 initiated a significant rise in the number of servicemen and women participating in Netball at all levels.
